You're right, it's ultimately hard to know. I didn't touch on it too much, but Kat was designed very differently from the average Japanese protagonist. She has darker skin and a curvier profile, and she's not a badass or even super smart. She's normal. But she's normal to the extent that she's also extremely unique because she stays true to herself.
